To be honest, this all started with no history in this business … so perhaps ‘our delusional vision’ or ‘crazy idea we hope works’ is a more apt title to the section.
From original idea to where we stand today is a path fed by so many inputs, twists and turns, and God’s hand. Mark & Britt (aka, us), are originally from the area – Mark hailing from the metropolis of Plum Branch, suburb of McCormick, SC, and Britt a resident of Lincolnton, GA for most of her life (save for living in 5 different states by the time she was in 2nd grade following her dad’s job … ‘ole dad’ or Butch as most knew him).
After marrying, Mark and Britt resided in the Greenville/Spartanburg area – Britt an educator and Mark a traveling software mogul (not really, but that sounds better than salesman).
Following the death of Britt’s mom in March 2023, the family decided to move ‘home’ and live in the house in which Britt grew up. Moving back to a small town meant trying to find jobs and a way to support this crazy bunch.
Britt’s path was heart driven … she has always been an educator and KNEW she wanted to keep working with children. Having been an administrator for the most recent 10+ years, she chose a path to get back in the classroom and has never been happier (except for her wedding day … Mark’s words, not hers).
Mark had grown weary of airplanes, zoom calls, and the corporate world and was intent on doing something ‘different’ … and one idea was to start a business in Lincolnton … but what? The family took a poll and each of them (Mark, Britt, Katie Britt and Ben) wrote down businesses that they thought could be of value to Lincolnton. Every one of them wrote down ‘a Country Meat Center type place’.
The Country Meat Center https://countrymeatcenter.com/ is a local market run by the Brown family in Woodruff, SC where the McKinneys moved from when relocating to Lincolnton, GA. The Brown family has been in the market business for years upon years upon years. They love on people, have amazing products, and you feel better coming out than when you went in. Mark went in, found Mr. Niles Brown sitting in his office and made the introduction – “Hi Mr. Niles, my name is Mark McKinney, and I want to do what you’ve done here, but in a small town in Georgia. I have no experience doing this type of thing, and I’d appreciate your help and guidance.”
Mr. Niles said ‘You want to do this (waving arms)? In Georgia? Sir, I will do anything in my power to help you’. And from that, a friendship ensued, and his fingerprints are all over The Outer Ring Market.
Mark also reached out to a local fixture in Edgefield, SC The Ole Edgefield Butcher Shop (https://www.oleedgefieldbutchershop.com/) and Mr. Robert Brazell. Mr. Robert selflessly offered up his time and his years of experience to meet with the McKinneys and share his wisdom and guidance on how to go about establishing a business. One of the most telling moments in that first meeting was this; Mark asked ‘Mr. Robert, give me your best piece of advice … above all else, what is that thing I need to do or NOT to do?’ to which Mr. Robert said ‘Have your building blessed. God’s hand has been on us from day one, and we could not do this without Him.’
So we did, and we have been blessed beyond measure with support, relationships, and opportunities to grow as a family.
This business gives us a chance to offer a service and high quality products to the community and surrounding areas while loving on folks and being the hands and feet of Jesus, just like Mr. Niles and Mr. Robert. In addition, we get to ensure that Britt’s mom, Jane’s, legacy lives forever through the homemade recipes we sell featuring her recipes.
We thank you for taking the time to learn a little more about what we do, and how we came to be. Come see us if you haven’t already … and if you’ve already been, come back!
